What Is a Spout Pouch

The structure of a spout pouch falls into two parts: the spout and the stand-up pouch. The stand-up pouch part is built in the same way as an ordinary four-side-seal stand-up pouch, but it generally uses laminated material so that it can meet the requirements of different food packaging. The spout part can be seen as a bottle neck with a straw added; a common approach is to weld the spout into an opening left in the pouch body so that the spout and the pouch form a seal. The two parts are joined tightly to create a drink package that can be sucked from. Being a flexible pack, it poses no difficulty when drinking, and once sealed the contents do not shift about easily, which makes it a fairly ideal modern drink package and a familiar sight on the shelf.

Compared with common packaging formats, the most notable advantage of the spout pouch is portability. It can go easily into a backpack or even a pocket, and it shrinks in volume as the contents are used up, so it takes up less space to carry. Soft drinks on the market today are mainly packaged in PET bottles, laminated aluminium cartons and cans; with competition between similar products becoming more obvious by the day, improving the packaging is undoubtedly one of the effective ways to compete on differentiation, and it is a route many brands already take.

The spout pouch combines the reclosability of the PET bottle with the contemporary look of the laminated aluminium carton, and in printing it also has advantages that traditional drink packaging cannot match. Because it uses the basic stand-up pouch format, the display area of a spout pouch is clearly larger than that of a PET bottle, and better than that of packaging such as the Tetra pillow pack, which cannot stand up.
