Applications of Foil Packaging Pouches

What are the applications of foil packaging pouches? In practice they fall into two broad areas: food, and non-food applications in industry and electronics.

In food packaging, foil pouches are used mainly to protect the aroma, quality, flavour and colour of milk, rice, meat products, dried fish, aquatic products, cured meats, roast duck, roast chicken, roast pork, frozen foods, ham, salted meat products, sausages, cooked meat products, pickles, bean paste and seasonings. These categories share several traits: some contain oil, some are prone to oxidation, and some are sensitive to light, so they all place certain demands on the barrier and light-blocking performance of the packaging. It is this shared requirement that brings such different foods into the same kind of pouch.

The other broad area is industry and electronics, where foil pouches suit the packaging of circuit boards, electronic products, precision mechanical parts, consumer goods and industrial products — for example PC boards, ICs, electronic components, SMT placement and light bars in the LED industry, precision hardware and auto parts. That dual suitability is what makes the format so widely used across industries.

The reason one material can cover two such different fields lies in the foil layer itself: it neither absorbs nor transmits light, and it provides a strong barrier against light, moisture and oxygen. That makes it suitable both for foods that must be protected from light and oxidation, and for electronic and precision parts that need protection from moisture.

When it comes to selecting a specific pouch, the properties of the contents, the required shelf life and the transport conditions all have to be weighed together. Different products place the emphasis differently on barrier, light blocking and puncture resistance, and the structure and style of the packaging should be decided accordingly, so that these characteristics of aluminium foil are genuinely put to the right use and the pouch performs the way the application requires.
