The environmental direction for spout pouches comes down to three trends: harmlessness, composting and reduction at source. Degradable pouches biodegrade into harmless fragments after landfill burial, composting gains ground as landfill and incineration face restrictions, and reduction aims to cut production, resource use and waste at the source.

A foil pouch uses aluminium foil as its functional layer. Its matte surface does not absorb light, and its multi-layer build gives it strong light-blocking and barrier properties along with oil resistance and softness. It is non-toxic, has no particular odour, usually adopts a four-layer structure with water and oxygen barrier performance, and can be made to measure in flat, stand-up and gusseted styles.

Sealing defects on foil pouches fall into two groups: seals that are not tight enough, and seals that wrinkle or blister. Weak seals usually trace back to low sealing temperature, insufficient pressure or an unstable sealing material, while wrinkling and blistering relate to the heat resistance of the material, the adhesive and ink, residual solvent, and the condition of the sealing bars.

A spout pouch is made up of two parts: a spout and a stand-up pouch. The pouch part is built in the same way as an ordinary four-side-seal stand-up pouch but generally uses laminated material to meet the requirements of different food packaging, while the spout part can be seen as a bottle neck with a straw added. The two are joined tightly to form a drink package that can be sucked from.

A stand-up spout pouch has a horizontal supporting structure at the base and a spout at the top or side, so it stands unaided. Materials are chosen by layer: the outer layer carries printing and external strength, the middle layer provides barrier, and the inner layer handles heat sealing, with all three matched to each other and to whether the contents are solid or liquid.
